Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a dramatic twist to an anti-corruption raid, Odisha Vigilance officials seized unaccounted cash worth over ₹2.1 crore from multiple properties linked to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer (Plan Roads) of the Rural Works Department. The raids were conducted simultaneously on Friday across seven locations in Bhubaneswar, Angul, and Pipili based on allegations of disproportionate assets.
As vigilance officers closed in on his Bhubaneswar flat, Sarangi allegedly tried to get rid of the cash by throwing bundles of ₹500 notes out of his window. Officials confirmed that the money was recovered from the ground in the presence of witnesses.
The operation uncovered ₹1 crore from his Dumduma flat and another ₹1.1 crore from his double-storeyed house in Karadagadia, Angul. Search teams also examined other properties including flats in Puri, his office chamber, and paternal residences. The search was conducted by a large team of officers under legal warrants from the Special Judge (Vigilance), Angul.
Cash counting is still underway, but officials have confirmed a total seizure of around ₹2.1 crore so far. Vigilance officials said the investigation is ongoing and further action will be taken after a complete assessment of assets.
